Wind, Rain & Champagne | Ashes Barns Wedding Photographer

There are October weddings… and then there are October weddings.

Catherine and Fred tied the knot at the ever beautiful Ashes Barns, and while the weather did its absolute best to audition for a disaster movie (sideways rain, wild wind, relentless downpour) these two just smiled their way through it like they had ordered it especially for dramatic effect.

And honestly? It was iconic.

Morning Prep Cosy, Calm & A Little Bit Fizz Fuelled

One of the reasons I love working at Ashes Barns (and yes, I am very proud to be a recommended supplier there) is the on site prep spaces. While the rain battered the windows, inside was warm, cosy and full of buzz.

Catherine’s morning was exactly what you want it to be chilled, joyful and full of hype. Bridesmaids and family raised glasses of bubbly, grazed on a selection of very tasty snacks, and made sure Catherine felt like the absolute queen she is. Hair and makeup by Ell’s Belles (Ellie is a wizard, by the way) did not budge an inch despite the gale force winds and biblical rain that followed. Not. One. Inch.

Her dress from Eva Victoria Bridal was effortlessly elegant and moved beautifully (even when the wind tried to claim the veil as its own later on).

Meanwhile, Fred and the guys were in the cottage style room onsite (a scene of teamwork, mild buttonhole confusion, and the occasional cheeky bottle being swigged while they figured it all out). Exactly as it should be.

The Ceremony Warm Hearts, Stormy Skies

The ceremony was held indoors in the barn and it could not have been more perfect. Rain poured outside, but inside it was intimate, candlelit and emotional. Guests stood shoulder to shoulder as Catherine walked down the aisle on her dad’s arm. There were tears. There were proud smiles. There was that quiet kind of magic you cannot stage.

The florals by Blossoms were unreal full of colour and life, popping beautifully against the rustic barn backdrop. Even on the greyest day, they brought sunshine inside.

Confetti, Veil Drama & Very Damp Portraits

We caught a tiny break in the rain after the ceremony (a miracle) which meant one thing confetti tunnel time. Guests formed a human tunnel of joy and launched handfuls of confetti as Catherine and Fred ran through (Catherine very nearly losing her veil to the wind in the process). Worth it.

The rain returned quickly (of course it did) so family portraits were done inside the barn. It was cosy, slightly chaotic in the best way, and full of laughter as we worked in a tighter space than planned. But honestly? You would never know from the photos.

Then came the brave bit.

We headed outside. In the pouring rain. Wind howling. All of us getting soaked through to the bone.

And Catherine and Fred? Smiles from ear to ear.

We wandered the stunning grounds of Ashes Barns, creating the dreamiest, most dramatic portraits. The weather could not dampen their day if anything, it made it unforgettable.

Speeches, Sparklers & Champagne Showdowns

Speeches had everything tears, cheers, hilarious anecdotes, heartfelt reminders of love and loyalty. The kind that make you laugh and well up at the same time.

Then back outside we went. Yes. Again.

Sparklers in the rain? Absolutely. A sparkler tunnel with glowing light cutting through the drizzle was pure magic. And because Catherine and Fred fully committed to the drama, we finished with epic champagne spray shots, backlit against the venue at night (rain sparkling in the flash like something from a movie).

Cake, Dance Floor Antics & Photobooth Chaos

Cake by For Goodness Cake was cut, glasses were topped up, and then it was time for the first dance.

The band, The Aviators (booked via Function Central), were phenomenal. Not just good wedding band good, properly brilliant. Packed dance floor from the first note, seamless transitions, huge energy and the kind of vocals that make people abandon all dignity in favour of full volume singalongs.

Once guests were invited onto the dance floor, it was game over. Singing. Jiving. Jumping. The works.

After an hour of absolute scenes, my regular coverage wrapped up (but we were not done).

Out came the photobooth setup. Studio flashes. Diva worthy backdrop. Questionable props. Ninety minutes of pure chaos. Guests threw themselves into it (sometimes literally) creating hilarious images they will be laughing at for years to come.

Catherine and Fred, you legends. You embraced every second, whatever the weather threw at you. Soaked shoes, wind whipped hair and all, you never stopped smiling.

October storms and all… what a day.
